A Journey Beyond the Scale

At just 23, Alex's story unfolds like many others, shadowed by the specter of prediabetes and diabetes-2.

The condition has been running in the family for generations, with both an aunt and a great-grandmother managing the disease. School days for Alex were marred by bullying over her weight, which planted the seeds of an eating disorder that would grow wildly in her teenage years. The desperate attempts to shed pounds through cycles of starvation and binging only served to betray her, leading to a metabolism that slowed dramatically.

By 14, the word 'obese' was a silent ghost that haunted Alex. To turn the tide, her parents set an ultimatum: lose a kilogram a week or lose internet privileges. But the strategy was flawed, leading Alex to deceive the diet and the scale until the plan was quietly shelved. And then there was grandma, whose Slavic culinary feats — especially those irresistible perogies — were consumed with love but contributed to the struggle.

Weight loss remained elusive, and by 17, an endocrinologist confirmed what Alex already feared—they were officially overweight. Then came the pandemic, and with it, a crushing wave of depression and anxiety that saw Alex seeking solace in the fleeting comfort of fast carbs. The situation worsened in 2022 as her government started the war:  psychiatrist visits became as routine as those to the endocrinologist, who soon diagnosed Alex with prediabetes.

Canada offered a fresh start in 2023. There, nourished by a new environment, Alex began to piece herself back together. Intermittent fasting and a keto diet led to a significant weight loss. But the scars ran deeper than the scale could show, and a binge ended their keto journey, though not their commitment to intermittent fasting which continued to stabilize her insulin levels.

The road to recovery has been paved with introspection for Alex. She realized the diets forced upon her at the tender age of 10 did more harm than good, disrupting a metabolism that wasn't ready to be tested. Now, support comes in the form of an aunt who understands the diabetic dance and a partner who champions daily walks and the joy of dancing.

Despite regaining some weight since her initial loss, Alex stands firmer, mentally fortified against the lure of food, thanks to therapy and their fasting regimen. This journey isn't just about managing prediabetes or the numbers on a scale. It's about breaking free from the past's constraints and moving forward with a supportive community's rhythm—one step, one dance move at a time.

The Weight of Solitude

In a small, cluttered apartment at the edge of town, lived Mr. Jenkins, an old man in his late seventies. He had lived a long life, filled with memories now fading with time. But what weighed heaviest on his heart was not his age, but the solitude that enveloped him like a thick fog.

Mr. Jenkins had been diagnosed with diabetes in his early sixties. At first, he managed it well, with the support of his wife. But when she passed away, his world crumbled. They had no children, and most of their friends had either moved away or passed on by themselves.

Now, Mr. Jenkins spent his days alone, his only companionship the occasional visit from a neighbor or the fleeting conversations with the cashier at the grocery store. His meals were simple, often consisting of canned soup or a sandwich, as cooking had become too much of a chore for him.

Every day was a struggle. His diabetes required constant monitoring, but without anyone to remind him or help him keep track, he often forgot. His blood sugar levels would fluctuate wildly, leaving him feeling weak and dizzy.

Simple tasks, like grocery shopping or cleaning, became monumental challenges. His apartment grew dusty, and the fridge often sat empty for days. He knew he needed help, but he was too proud to ask, and besides, who would he ask? He was alone in this world.

His loneliness weighed on him heavily, a constant ache in his chest. He longed for companionship, for someone to talk to, to share his stories with. But as the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, he resigned himself to the fact that he would likely live out his days in solitude.

One day, as he sat by his window, watching the world pass by, a knock on his door startled him. It was a young woman, a volunteer from a local community center. She had heard about Mr. Jenkins through a neighbor and had come to offer her help.

At first, Mr. Jenkins was hesitant. He was used to being alone, and the thought of letting someone in felt foreign to him. But the young woman was persistent, and slowly, she began to chip away at the walls he had built around himself.

She helped him with his groceries, reminded him to check his blood sugar, and most importantly, she listened. She listened to his stories, his fears, and his dreams. And in doing so, she brought a glimmer of light into his dark world.

With her help, Mr. Jenkins learned to manage his diabetes better. But more importantly, he learned that he was not alone, that there were people out there who cared for him. And as he sat by his window, watching the world pass by, he felt a warmth in his heart that he thought he had lost forever.

A Balancing Act

Sarah wakes up to the blaring sound of her alarm clock. It's 6 a.m., time for her to start another day. She stretches, yawns, and then reaches for her glucometer. As a person living with diabetes, her day begins with a routine: checking her blood sugar levels.

Her fingers prick, and she winces slightly, a routine pain she's grown accustomed to over the years. The meter reads 180 mg/dL—higher than she'd like. She sighs, knowing she'll need to adjust her insulin dosage and diet today.

Breakfast is a careful balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Too much of one thing could send her blood sugar soaring. As she eats her oatmeal and eggs, she thinks about how different her meals are from those of her friends. Eating out is a challenge, as she often needs to ask for modifications to the menu.

At work, Sarah juggles her responsibilities with regular glucose checks and insulin injections. She's fortunate to have an understanding boss and colleagues who support her. But there are days when her energy levels dip, and she struggles to concentrate—a reminder of the constant battle her body fights.

After work, Sarah heads to the gym. Exercise is crucial for managing her diabetes, but it's not always easy. Some days, she feels fatigued, and her muscles ache. She pushes through, knowing that staying active is key to staying healthy.

Dinner is another carefully planned meal. She opts for grilled chicken, vegetables, and a small portion of brown rice. Dessert is off the table most nights, replaced by a piece of fruit or a sugar-free treat.

Before bed, Sarah checks her blood sugar one last time. Tonight, it's within the target range. She smiles, knowing that today was a good day. As she settles into bed, she reflects on her journey with diabetes. It's been challenging, but it's also taught her resilience, discipline, and the importance of self-care.

Tomorrow, she'll wake up and do it all over again. But for now, she closes her eyes, grateful for another day lived to the fullest despite the challenges of living with diabetes.
